Once I became a Certified Grief Recovery Specialist and would talk about it, people who had experienced the death of a pet, a companion animial, would come up to me softly to talk of their dealing with pet bereavement.  They were almost embarrassed to talk about it or to mention the grief associated with the death of beloved pet in the same room and presentation as those who were coping with the loss of a human loved one.  They were or felt others would compare deaths.  In the Grief ♥ Recovery® Program, we never compare losses.  Each relationship, including those with our pets, is unique.  Our focus is on the emotional aspect of grief.

Dear ones, please know, the death of a pet is another emotionally laden grief experience.  They were your beloved animal life companion.  Often our pets, our cat, our dog, our bird, they love us unconditionally.  So their death is also quite painful, and we miss them dreadfully.  Completing the emotions around pet bereavement is also important to do. You, too, are behaving in a totally normal and natural manner to grieve that loss as well.

In fact, just yesterday at Sunday Brunch, I was seated with two other ladies who had also been widowed, and when we were sort of counting just how many deaths we'd had, all three of us included the deaths of our pets as well.  Offering us unconditional love, our losing them, expressing and completing our grief with them is also essential.
